Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

To quit or not to quit, that is the question—
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous employment,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by resigning, end them. To resign, to sleep in—
No more; and by sleeping in to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That this job is heir to — 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To resign, to sleep in—
To sleep in, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of unemployment what debts may come,
When we have shuffled off to Unempoyment,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes calamity of so long tenure,
For who would bear the whips and scorns of poor management,
Th'oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised work, the HR's delay,
The insolence in the office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,
When she herself might her comfort make
With a simple letter? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after resignation,
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No ex-employee returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus fear of debt and unemployment does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.

O what a noble mind is here o’erthrown!
The bloggers’s, catholic’s, scholar’s eye, tongue, wit,
Th’spirit and rose of the cold state,
The glass of fashion and the mould of form,
Th’observed of all observers, quite, quite, down!

Yours was better! But, I couldn't help myself!

I take it you are still torn between leave and absence?

It's much easier to job search when you are employed because you will be less tempted to take a marginal offer.

That is wonderful, Adoro. Not your condition, your rendition of the soliloquy.

Sleep on it, revise it a time or two more, and you will have something that someone would want to see in print, not electrons.

I'm getting closer and closer to submitting my resignation. I expect that my request for leave will be denied.

Ray ~ actually, I HAVE a job to go to...unfortunately it won't pay what I need, but it'll be better than nothing, will stretch my tax refund, and in reality, I'm going to have to take a huge pay cut to get out of this job anyway. No matter what I do, I'm screwed. I might as well jump....and either land somewhere, or burn to death in this job. Quite honestly, if I don't quit now, my performance will continue to slip and they'll just let me go. I'd rather leave when I can leave with references and before the burnout gets so bad that I just stop showing up. Never done that before, but I've seen it happen to better employees than I've EVER been.

Beautiful poem - I pray for a better paying job for you. Leaving a miserable job for financial woes is not necessarily an improvement. Take care!

sanctus, thank you for your prayers.

I had to memorize this monologue from Hamlet when I was in High School, although to satirize it I had to look it up online and change the words to make it fit my situation. :-) I don't do a lot of these, but sometimes the inspiration just hits.

Hey, did you delete that previous post, the one about Office Space? :-)

LOL, yeah, I did.

I didn't want to have 2 whiny posts back to back, and I thought that Hamlet did a much better job at whining. He's at least more eloquent, and I could post a picture of Ophelia at the top. So I "edited" and that post has become a magic disappearing post. :-)

Adoro - I think we work at the same place! I think we are going through the same things!

What to do? Pray to St. Joseph and don't be hasty - unless you are a lot younger than I am.

Maybe call in sick for a week.
