Year Two Begins

Tonight I begin my second year of class. After this weekend of marathon classes, I will be back to the routine of irregular work hours, studying when I can, trying to find unbroken time, Saturday morning at the coffee shop, and agonizing over papers.

And then the last week before class, scrambling to get finished, knowing I haven't read everything, forgetting things...speaking of which...I can't remember all the books of the Old Testament and I KNOW our prof is going to test us on them tonight! Especially the major and minor prophets, which is what this class is about!

But the good news is that we'll be using the Summa a lot this semester for our Christian Anthropology class, among other sources, and Spiritual Theology...well, I'm not sure what all that will consist in. But hey! I'll know more by the end of the day Sunday!

So, all of you, enjoy your weekend...I'll be sitting in a classroom. The entire time.

Tell me again why I'm doing this?

I'm sure you'll do just fine!

Although it's no fun sitting in a classroom on the weekend...but just think...one year is done! Yeah!!!!

Yeah....the "yay" at the end of year 1 wore off by the end of May...about a week after we were out of class.

Now that I've had my first evening, I'm staring at the mountain of stuff in front of me, and realizing I still have a total of 4 semesters of this to go.

"Yay" is long gone. You can't even see it anymore. Not even with a telescope.

You're doing it because you're interested in God and you'd love to get closer to Him.

A weekend of classes is a lot like Purgatory or fasting in the desert, so you're getting closer to Him, all right. :)

...so you can keep teaching me so I don't have to sit in that class all weekend, right? You are a true friend. :-)

Because to not do what God expects when God expects you to do it is disobedience.

(delayed obedience is disobedience)

But you have the promise that if God wants you there He will make a way to keep you there.

Keep on keeping on. From someone who made it through to the end of the Graudual School shuffle, The dance is amazing.

Hi. I don't know how you got on in class, remembering all the prophets, but I have a suggestion. No matter how weird it sounds, please give it a try. It's just a simple memory trick, associating names and words with images. The technique is nothing new, I used similar when I was learning a foreign language. I had a vocabulary of over 1,000 words within two weeks!

I have a book, How to Memorise the Faith, by Kevin Vost. ISBN is 1933184175. It teaches the technique used by St Thomas Aquinas to memorise Sacred Scripture. It does work, if you apply the basics of the system. Within 15 minutes I could list the books of the prophets by using this system. I would seriously recommend it to anyone (Do I sound like a salesman??)

A while ago I was talking to some young people in the confirmation group, and showed them how to use the system to remember the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. The whole group picked it up, without problem. It is surely not a replacement for study, but does help remembering lists. Remember easily the fruits of the spirit, the names of the Apostles, the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, all the books of the Bible, and on and on.

I know I'm banging on a bit, but I think it's brilliant! :-)

For the same reason you write, Adoro. :)

I remember back when I was in grad school...I was working on the LAST PROJECT (would have been called a thesis if I hadn't been in b-school, I s'pose) and I was ready to toss in my hat. I was just DONE. Finished. Fed up. Maxed out. My boyfriend (who would become Prince Charming the Husband of Great Blessings) told me to sit back and be rational. "Come on," he said, "you're ALMOST THERE." (It was one of the few times I've ever heard him speak in caps like that.)

So, Adoro, I say to you, lacking the flair of Prince Charming and the in-face inflection (though if you email me your phone number, I'll say it with my voice), "you can do it!"

Sending you some baby drool to see you through the getting-started pains... :)
