CALLING FOR READER PARTICIPATION!

I've done a little research and did find a Catholic book Meme, but I wasn't satisfied as I felt that there were many books that should be listed but aren't.

So...I've started my own. Although I know I haven't read every Catholic book out there, not even 100 of them, I think maybe some of you would have book recommendations. What are the top 100 Catholic books? I'm looking for both contemporary spiritual books as well as contemporary fiction, to go along with the classic books I'll have listed such a St. Francis de Sales and the like. At this point my goal is to turn this into a sort of Meme, but who knows? Maybe it'll be a stand-alone post of good Catholic book recommendations.

So....everyone...suggestions? What makes the cut for the top 100 Catholic books? Go through your home libraries, look at your dog-eared tomes, and consider your Amazon wish list. Maybe it's a book you haven't read but have heard great things about? Maybe it's a reference resource? Maybe a Flannery O'Connor novel?

I need help with this list....send me your favorite books, and even if you see that someone has listed your title already, list it again. That'll tell me it's important!

The combox awaits....

A contemporary one that really blew me away big time: 7 Secrets of the Eucharist by Vinny Flynn

  9. One book that actually helped get me through a spiritual crisis I was going through a couple years ago is "Story of a Soul" by St. Therese. It helped me find my way back to Christ when I was drifting away from him.

  10. Morris West's books are 'out-of-print' i'm told, but can be found and are a great read

anyone tried using Harold Bloom's 'The Western Canon'? Certainly not 'Catholic' but are universal.

  12. If we are including authors who wrote about Catholic themes, and who had a Catholic sensibility(but who weren't necessarily Catholic themselves) I would recommend Elizabeth Goudge. Especially her novels "Island Magic" and "Gentian Hill". Her recurrent themes are renewal and redemption.
Another one I would recommend is "To Quell the Terror" by William Bush; it is the story of the Carmelite martyrs of Compiegne during the Reign of Terror.

  16. Thanks, everyone! I have some of those on my list, some not.

I've considered CS. Lewis but decided to leave him and other similar authors off this particular list...thinking to keep this solidly Catholic by authorship. Although it kills me because I LOVE CS Lewis! lol!

Thank you for ALL the recommendations!

    ReplyDelete
  17. i'm a bit late perhaps with the recommendations, but i've been reading the biography of st. thomas aquinas by Chesterton, and it's amazing. Just started his bio on St. Francis...but I've heard it is equally good!
yes, pity about Lewis. After all, he had a considerable hand in leading me back to the Church, as I'm sure it is the case with many others.
